TAKING CARE OF YOUR JOOLS
Gems are amongst nature's most durable creations, but they require care and love in order to avoid damage and to keep their natural beauty. Unlike cheaper alternatives, such as plastics or glass, natural gemstones are more susceptible to accidental damage. Caring for your gemstones should be a combination of common sense and simple precautions:
WEARING
- Always remove your gemstone jools if doing 'vigourous activities' such as playing sport, swimming or doing housework. They could easily fall onto hard surfaces and shatter or discolour due to absorbed perspiration or cleaning chemicals.
- Put your gemstone jools on AFTER using lotions, sprays or perfumes, not before. Avoid bringing your gemstone jools into contact with cosmetics as far as you possibly can. Pearls in particular can be damaged over time if they are are regularly in contact with cosmetic liquids.
- Remove your gemstone jools with care - never pull on the gems or clasps.
- NEVER clean your gemstone jools with ultrasonic cleaners. Diamonds, Rubies and Sapphires are generally fine in ultrasonic cleaners, but many gemstones are porous and could be irrepairably damaged if you clean them by this method.
- To clean gemstone jools, it is probably best to do no more than wipe them with a moist cloth or, if more thorough cleaning is required, just use warm water and a soft toothbrush or cotton buds. Remember, opaque gems such as Turquoise, Lapis, Malachite and Lazuli can be porous and may absorb chemicals or soaps causing discolouration, so never allow gems to 'soak', even in plain water.
- Always carefully wipe your gemstone jools with a soft, lint free, cloth after you have worn them. This helps to remove any oils and salts, that could otherwise damage your gemstone jools, if not removed prior to storage.
- Sterling silver or silver plating may tarnish over time if left unprotected and unpolished. It can be polished using a soft dry cloth or by carefully using a "Sunshine Cloth" or an impregnated silver polishing cloth obtainable from a jeweller's shop, (but avoid impregnated silver cleaning clothes coming into contact with the gemstones). Never use silver 'dips' as these will damage gemstones.
- NEVER leave gemstone jools in direct sunlight, or close to heat sources, as this can result in some gems 'drying out' and becoming brittle, and/or the fading of the gemstone's natural colours.
- The best way to store your gemstone jools is in the compartment of a jewellery box or in soft pouches.
- Store each gemstone jool separately, and necklaces flat, so that harder stones don't scratch softer ones. Gemstones can scratch one another if stored carelessly.
